  • Examine an individual’s current situation regarding substance use disorder
  • Help a person identify their own goals and objectives for changing behaviours regarding substance misuse
  • Help a person decide whether harm reduction or abstinence is the best route for change
  • Help a person begin a programme of abstinence
  • Help a person begin a programme of harm reduction
  • Provide guidelines for the monitoring and review process in keeping with an individual’s goals for changing behaviour
  • Outline key resources to assist in the programme of change
