Addressing alcohol and drug-related issues: Reducing harm and supporting positive change.

ASCERT are proud to announce their involvement in Omagh Pride 2023 on Saturday 17th June.

Omagh Pride’s first Pride Parade took place in 2021.  Their purpose is to work in partnership with local community & voluntary organisations to promote inclusion and to ensure that everyone within the LGBTQIA+ community can access services.  As an alcohol, drug and mental health charity, ASCERT will be providing information, signposting and advice to everyone attending Omagh Pride 2023.

ASCERT’s Chief Executive Gary McMichael said “This event is a great opportunity to raise awareness in Omagh and the surrounding areas about the services and support we offer for people with concerns about alcohol or substance use.  ASCERT is committed to providing services that are available and accessible to everyone.  If someone needs advice or help, they can be reassured that ASCERT is here to help in a way that is inclusive, non judgemental and person centred”

When it comes to accessing services, many members of the LGBTQIA+ community report not wanting to disclose gender or sexual orientation to professionals.  To break down these barriers, ASCERT staff received LGBTQIA+ Awareness Training earlier this year, delivered by Cara-Friend, and have put their training into practice ensuring every member of the community is welcomed and feels accepted at ASCERT’s offices located in Omagh, Lisburn and Belfast.

Gary continued “The opportunity to connect with the West Tyrone community on alcohol and drugs awareness is something vitally important to us particularly as this area of Northern Ireland covers rural areas and potentially isolated individuals.  We encourage anyone seeking information for themselves, a friend or family member to come over for a chat at our stand; we will be able to help you.  Our services are confidential and completely free of charge, offering support to young people, individuals and families, and our staff will be able to advise you on which ASCERT service is right for you.”
