Duration: Week 1-5 Principles in Tackling Substance Misuse (Core Module). Week 6-10 Assessment Planning & Care (Core Module). Week 11&12 Harm Reduction (Optional Module).

Provides a professional qualification in Drugs and Alcohol for those whose work requires a considerable level of knowledge and competence in addressing substance misuse issues.

Eligibility: This course is available free to those working in the statutory or voluntary sector in Northern Ireland. Participants must be working in a substance misuse related role and have either completed the Foundation Module - Adults and Family Members course or have equivalent experience and knowledge.

Outcomes

This course includes guided learning hours of 120 hours. Participants are required to complete workbooks, assignments and assessments and will involve additional learning in the students own time in addition to the classroom based sessions. The course comprises 10 days delivery of mandatory modules plus a 2 day optional module that learners can choose from either Dual Diagnosis for Substance Misuse Practitioners or Providing Harm Minimisation Support to Substance Users. By the end of this course participants will; Understand substances, their use and effects Understand current relevant legislation and local and national strategies for delivery of services for substance users Understand the levels of treatment provision Understand the modalities of treatment. Understand the role of prevention as a health promotion approach Understand the need to promote diversity, equality and the rights of service users Understand how to promote choice, wellbeing and protection of substance users Be able to monitor, maintain and promote health and safety in the working environment

Relevance

This course is available free to anyone working in the statutory or voluntary sector in Northern Ireland that encounter people who misuse substances. Aimed at those with experience of working with alcohol and drug users, or who have completed the foundation module. It is particularly relevant for those individuals who do not have a professional qualification and whose work requires a considerable level of knowledge and competence in addressing substance misuse issues. It is open to individuals working in health and social care, education, criminal justice and the voluntary and community sector. PLEASE NOTE registering for the course does not straight away guarantee your space. Once you register you will receive and application form which MUST be filled in.
