"reducing alcohol and drug related harm in our communities"
Key Information

This belongs to the group of medicines known as Analgesics.  Co-codamol contains a combination of two pain-killing ingredients Paracetamol and Codeine. It is used to stop pain and fever (high temperature).  This combination is used to reduce fever and to relieve severe pain caused by a variety of conditions.   Co-codamol can be used to relieve pain caused by rheumatic and muscular pain, sprains, strains, backache, headache, sore throat, toothache and period pain. It is also useful in treating cold and 'flu-like' symptoms and reducing fever (high temperature).

Co-codomol usually comes in capsule or tablet form and soluble form.  When taken together with other medicines that have a sedative effect on the central nervous system, for example, sleeping medicines, Anti-Depressants and Anti-Histamines, drowsiness is likely to be increased.

HEALTH RISKS (long term) which includes withdrawal & tolerance:

The key risk of abuse of Co-codamol is liver damage stemming from the high intake of Paracetamol, and so people taking excessive quantities of Co-codamol expose themselves to risk of liver damage.  Taking co-codamol regularly for a long time can lead to addiction, which might cause you to feel restless and irritable when you stop taking the medicine.

Depending on the amount, 8 mgs can be sold over the counter and 30 mgs has to be prescribed by a doctor.

  1. Excess consumption of alcohol with Co-Codamol may become fatal.
  2. The ‘Co’ in Co-Codamol is short for Codeine.   Codeine (the active ingredient) is an opiate and converts to Morphine in the brain, leaving you feeling strangely happy.
  3. Co-codamol is a brand name for a pain reliever that combines two major ingredients, Paracetamol and Codeine.
  4. Taking too much Co-codamol can be dangerous.
  5. The combination of Paracetamol and Codeine is more effective than either drug on its own.
  6. Most people don't realise that natural Codeine is extracted from Opium. (It can also be made synthetically from Morphine.)
  7. It is a narcotic which, like Heroin and Morphine, can cause physical addiction.
  8. It is important that you do not take more than two tablets at any one time and that you do not take more than eight tablets in 24 hours.
  9. Taking ordinary Paracetamol with Co-Codamol could lead to an overdose.
  10. Co Codamol can be bought fairly cheaply across the counter in your local pharmacy or supermarket.   The stronger dose is only available on prescription.
