Anabolic Steroids

SCIENTIFIC TERM:

Durabolin, Stanozolol, Dianabol

STREET NAMES:

Iron Brew, Roids, Juice

EFFECTS:

Users take the drug as an aid to muscle development, though there is a strong chance that users will become more aggressive.

DRUG FORM & METHOD OF USE:

Anabolic steroids can be bought as tablets to be swallowed or as a liquid which is injected.  They’re often used by bodybuilders, athletes and other sports people because of the performance enhancing effects. Some people at times consume 10-100 times the medical dose.

HEALTH RISKS (long term) which includes withdrawal & tolerance:

Some steroid users have reported lethargy and depression on stopping use.  It is difficult to offer conclusive evidence regarding the effects of the long-term use of steroids as most users are taking multiple combinations and at doses that are well above the recommended level. There is some clear evidence that persistent and heavy use may cause infertility or lack of sex drive in men. Conversely some men may become sexually violent. Women may develop masculine side-effects such as deeper voice and smaller breasts.

LAW:

Anabolic steroids are Class C drugs to be sold only by pharmacists with a doctor's prescription. It's legal to possess or import steroids as long as they're in the form of a medicinal product for personal use. But possession or importing with intent to supply (which includes giving them to friends) is illegal and could lead to 14 years in prison and an unlimited fine.

  1. The use of Steroids dates back to World War II. German soldiers were given Steroids to increase their strength and aggression.
  2. Anabolic steroids are synthetic derivatives of the male hormone testosterone.
  3. The full name is Androgenic (promoting masculine characteristics) Anabolic (building) Steroids (the class of drugs).
  4. Aggression and other psychiatric side effects, including wild mood swings involving violence, may result from Anabolic Steroid abuse.
  5. Depression often is seen when the drugs are stopped and may contribute to Steroid dependence.
  6. Women often experience a "masculinization" effect when using Steroids. They may have an increase in facial hair, enlarged clitoris, deepened voice and changes in or cessation of the menstrual cycle.
  7. Men may experience a "feminization" effect when using Steroids. They can experience infertility, shrinking testicles, reduced sperm count, impotence, baldness and development of breasts.
  8. If you're young, abuse of Anabolic Steroids can stop you growing properly.
  9. Steroids can also give you high blood pressure and increase your risk of liver failure, stroke or heart attack.
  10. A significant side effect of some Anabolic Steroids is a tendency to produce an inflammation of the liver called Hepatitis when taken orally.
