Community Drugs Awareness Training

Course content

The course aims to enable participants to become more aware of community issues related to substance misuse; and develop participants’ knowledge & skills, explore their attitudes and enable them to become more effective in supporting their communities in addressing substance misuse issues.

        Classification of drugs covered by the Misuse of Drugs Act

        Drug categories

        How drugs work in the brain

        The chemical basis for dependence, tolerance and withdrawal;

        Attitudes around drug use, users, dealers and their own use

       The stages of drug use

       The prevention continuum

       Risk and Protective Factors

       The impact of drug use on individuals, families and the community

       Drug related harm

       The main signs and symptoms of drug use

       Drugs and Northern Ireland, the strategic context.

Who is this course for?

Community and voluntary organisations/groups, anyone working with young people/adults, womens groups, concerned parents, volunteers. Any member of the public who would be interested in learning about substance misuse issues

This training is FREE

to people working in the Community & Voluntary Sector and the general public.

Accreditation?

7 credits at OCN Level 2. This is comparable to NVQ2, Intermediate GNVQ and GCSE grades A*-C.
