5 Day Training Course

Course content

The course aims to enable participants to become more aware of community issues related to substance misuse; and develop participants’ knowledge & skills, explore their attitudes and enable them to become more effective in supporting their communities in addressing substance misuse issues.

  •         Classification of drugs covered by the Misuse of Drugs Act

  •         Drug categories

  •         How drugs work in the brain

  •         The chemical basis for dependence, tolerance and withdrawal;

  •         Attitudes around drug use, users, dealers and their own use

  •        The stages of drug use

  •        The prevention continuum

  •        Risk and Protective Factors

  •        The impact of drug use on individuals, families and the community

  •        Drug related harm

  •        The main signs and symptoms of drug use

  •        Drugs and Northern Ireland, the strategic context.

  • Who is this course for?

    Community and voluntary organisations/groups, anyone working with young people/adults, womens groups, concerned parents, volunteers. Any member of the public who would be interested in learning about substance misuse issues

    This training is FREE

    to people working in the Community & Voluntary Sector and the general public.

    Accreditation?

    7 credits at OCN Level 2. This is comparable to NVQ2, Intermediate GNVQ and GCSE grades A*-C.
