Level 3 in Addiction Studies

Course Length – 12 x 3 hour sessions

This course is delivered by FASA

Course content

  •         An understanding of why drugs fall into certain categories

  •         The mechanism of action of a range of categories of drugs

  •         The major effects of a wide range of drugs on the human body

  •         The process of physical addiction in terms of brain chemistry

  •         Assessing the evidence for genetic predisposition to addiction

  •         The key reasons why addiction occurs

  •         The psychological, emotional, genetic and socio- environmental issues contributing to addiction

  •         Issues regarding addictive personalities’

  •         Behaviours that are commonly linked to addicts

  •         Dual diagnosis

  •         Methods previously used to treat addiction

  •         Comparisons between previous methods with current methods to treat addiction

  •         Current provision levels for users in the NI context

  • Who is this course for?

    This course is mainly for people working with clients that are misusing substances. It has been developed to explain the process of addiction both physically and psychologically. The course is made up of three Units:

  •        Effects of drugs on the human brain and body

  •        Treatments for drug users

  •        Key skills in working with drug users

  • This course takes an in depth at addiction and it is an entry requirement that participants have completed a Level 2 course.

    This training is FREE

    to people working in the Community & Voluntary Sector and the general public.

    Accreditation?

    12 credits at OCN Level 3. This is comparable to NVQ3, A Level, AS Level and AVCE
