DF118 (Dihydrocodeine)

DF 118 forte tablets contain the active ingredient Dihydrocodeine, which is a type of medicine called an Opioid painkiller. (NB. Dihydrocodeine is also available without a brand name, ie as the generic medicine.)

Opioid painkillers work by mimicking the action of naturally occurring pain-reducing chemicals called endorphins. Endorphins are found in the brain and spinal cord and reduce pain by combining with Opioid receptors.

Dihydrocodeine mimicks the action of natural endorphins by combining with the opioid receptors in the brain and spinal cord. This blocks the transmission of pain signals sent by the nerves to the brain. Therefore, even though the cause of the pain may remain, less pain is actually felt.

Dihydrocodeine is used to relieve moderate to severe pain.

Appearance and Use:

DF118's usually come in 30mgs tablet form, but can be in different strengths. DF118's are usually prescribed as the first signs of withdrawal from Opioids appear. The effects are similar to most Opioids - relief from pain feelings of well-being, nausea, pinpoint pupils, reduction in body temperature and blood pressure, slowing down of heart rate and may cause drowsiness. Overdose may occur if tablets are taken with other drugs and/or alcohol.

Effects:

The effects do not last long. DF118's are often taken at regular times during the day. Because many doses may have been taken over a short period of time, there are other effects that may be experienced. Constipation is very common, and so is the loss of 'sex drive'. . The effects of DF118's are not as strong as Heroin, so there may be the temptation to take more tablets. DF118's should only be as part of a detoxification regime usually over 3 weeks or less, or as a maintenance dose (if there shows to be intolerance to Methadone). DF118's should not be stopped too quickly or withdrawal symptoms will be experienced. The treatment of Opiate dependence with DF118's has not been fully researched therefore its effectiveness is not completely understood or documented, but it has been popularly prescribed by many doctors.

Law:

D118's are class B drugs
