Clonidine lowers blood pressure by decreasing the levels of certain chemicals in your blood. This allows your blood vessels (veins and arteries) to relax (widen) and your Heart to beat more slowly and easily.

Most people suffering from high blood pressure do not feel unwell, but it is important that high blood pressure is not left untreated and that you continue to take Clonidine even if you feel fine. This is because high blood pressure can damage the Heart, Kidneys and other organs over time.

Clonidine is used to treat hypertension (high blood pressure). Clonidine has also been used to relieve alcohol withdrawal, as an aid in Methadone and Opiate detoxification.

Clonidine belongs to the group of medicines known as Antihypertensives.
